Why hydration is key to skin health and anti-ageing

We spend a lot of time and money on anti-ageing products for our faces, but what about our bodies? The skin that covers our bodies is just as prone to ageing as the face – even moreso where skin is constantly exposed, like our hands. Our faces are constantly protected by moisturisers, sunscreen and makeup, but are we hanging our hands and bodies out to dry?

Why hydration is key to skin health and anti-ageing

Hydration is one of the most important factors in skin health and anti-ageing. Keeping your skin hydrated assists anti-ageing by actively promoting suppleness and elasticity, improving skin tone, texture and appearance, and maintaining barrier function and skin integrity.

Here are the 7 best ingredients for deep hydration – from head to toe

1. Glycerine
A natural by-product of the liquid soap making process. This highly moisturising agent acts as a humectant, which means it allows the skin to retain moisture. It is known to increase skin hydration, relieve dryness, and refresh the skin's surface.

2. Fatty alcohols
These natural emollients actively soften the skin and help prevent water loss. While alcohol can be perceived as dehydrating, fatty alcohols like cetyl and stearyl alcohol are actually deeply moisturising. Derived from plant lipids, fatty alcohols are found naturally in the skin’s own moisture barrier.

3. Squalane
A deeply hydrating fatty acid that shares its makeup with squalene, a compound made naturally in the skin’s sebaceous glands. Squalane regulates the moisture levels in cell membranes, helps to combat free radicals, and minimises oxidative stress to protect and rejuvenate skin cells.

*Note: check the products you’re using for their source of squalene as this ingredient is commonly sourced unsustainably from shark livers. WØRKS only uses squalene derived from certified organic olive oil.

4. Coconut oil
A biocompatible oil with strong similarities to the skin’s own natural hydrator, sebum. Contains short- and medium-chain fatty acids including lauric acid, which improves skin elasticity and suppleness, and linoleic acid which traps water for deep hydration.

5. Macadamia oil
Contains oleic acid, omega 3 and omega 6 which make it ultra moisturising, along with phytosterols that allow enhanced penetration to the skin’s deeper layers. This natural nut oil is known to soothe irritation and reduce redness, itching and inflammation.

6. Shea butter
Contains high concentrations of fatty acids and vitamins, making it a natural skin softener. Known for its deeply hydrating and conditioning effects and its ability to promote collagen production.

7. Sweet almond oil
This deeply hydrating nut oil is rich in vitamin A and is highly emollient, which means it helps to balance the absorption of moisture and improve skin tone and texture.

WØRKS hand and body care duos contain all seven of these natural hydrators.

Our organic liquid soaps, hand creams and body balms are formulated to protect and nourish the skin and assist anti-ageing from head to toe.

Just like anti-ageing face care, we recommend using scientifically formulated hand care and body care products to target the signs of ageing and promote plumper, firmer and younger looking skin.
